She arrived at the French Court at the age of
fifteen and became Queen before she was twenty. She was
the personification of 18th century French royal style but it was
the private world and intimate retreats that she created for herself
and the objects she delighted in which she held most dear.

The Rambouillet Dairy Service
In
June 1787, Louis XVI surprised Queen Marie Antoinette with
a gift - The Laiterie at Rambouillet. Inspired by Rousseau and a desire to
return to nature, fanciful dairies were very fashionable among the
aristocracy of Europe during the 18th century, but this dairy would
surpass all others. As remarkable as the paintings, sculpture and
furnishings that adorned the building itself were the porcelain pieces
designed to adorn the niches in the antechamber of the Laiterie of
the Queen. Neoclassical in design, all of the pieces of the dairy service
involved the storage and serving of milk and other dairy products,
adhering to the theme of the pleasure dairy - a temple dedicated to
milk.
Sixty -five pieces were delivered to Rambouillet in two shipments
in 1787 and 1788. Marie Antoinette may have only seen the pieces in the
first delivery.

A grisaille is a monochrome painting technique
executed in tones of gray, often produced to simulate relief
sculpture. The interior of The Laiterie at Rambouillet was decorated
with grisailles on the theme of the four seasons painted by
Sauvage. | |
Pastorales en
Grisaille This "Grisaille" of pastoral scenes was one
of the very first of its kind. Created in 1771, during the last
years of the reign of the beloved Louis XV, it reflects the influence of
Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
The Ancienne Manufacture Royale has perfectly reproduced
the wonderfully delicate brush strokes and subtle relief of the
originals, which can be found in the Montmartre Museum in Paris. |

The Litron cup also known as the "square cup"
(its height is equal to its diameter) derives from the Latin word
"litra", a unit of liquid measurement. Its saucer shape is noted for
its raised sides and deep well. It was first seen in 1752 when
consumption of chocolate, tea and coffee began to grow in
popularity. | |

Marie Antoinette's service was delivered to Versailles
on January 2, 1792. The pearl motif is suggestive of her taste for luxury,
while the cornflower was the wildflower she would gather into bouquets at
her country retreat in the hamlet of Le Petit Trianon. |
